To tell you the truth, the original idea that we had for this editorial was to talk about art and what it is about art that makes it a luxury. Or, in other words, why it is a luxury to be the owner of a work of art. However, one thing led to another and in the end we decided that the primary question that we should ask ourselves is ‘What makes luxury so special?’. By that, we don’t mean the visual and superficial elements (let’s avoid the clichés of people who by expensive handbags or go travelling in a yacht), but rather the more intangible side of things: What does it really mean to fly first class? Or to have a penthouse in Manhattan? Or to be an art collector?

Following on from this question, we can start by analysing the meaning of the word: luxury is the manifestation or exhibition of wealth, as well as objects that, to put it one way, are worth a considerable amount of money.
However, the concept and necessity of luxury go far beyond being able to buy a specific brand or the mere fact of being able to spend, buy and be ostentatious while doing so… We could say that luxury goes beyond the material and is somehow more of a feeling and an experience, which is something we have discussed in previous editorials regarding current luxury trends.
In the end, it is such an extensive concept that something that one person considers to be luxurious is not luxurious at all for others. That’s why the example of flying in first class is not merely an anecdote. Instead, it represent just how immaterial and subtle the difference can be between what is luxury and what is not. Simply put, it is relative, personal and very, very subjective.
Since we don’t want to be too abstract, let’s move on to the most simple idea in all of this: that the intangibility of luxury lies in what there is behind it. In the emotions that having, living and experiencing luxury can bring. It is not a case of having the most expensive things, but rather having differentiation, excellence and exclusivity. It’s not about travelling first class, but rather the peace of mind of ‘feeling at home’ that the privileged traveller experiences. It is not about collecting art to have the best or most expensive painting from an auction, but rather the zeal, commitment and even passion that has gone into getting that painting and having it in your home. It’s not simply there for others to admire, but also for the pleasure that being in possession of something exquisite can bring

¿Qué tiene el lujo?

Os decimos la verdad: antes de pensar en el tema de nuestro editorial de este mes la idea inicial fue hablar sobre el arte, sobre aquello de si el arte es un lujo. O dicho de otro modo, por qué ser propietario de una obra de arte es lujo. Sin embargo, una cosa llevó a la otra y al final llegamos a la conclusión de que la pregunta primigenia que debíamos hacernos es: ¿qué tiene el lujo? Pero no el más visual y superficial que todos conocemos (no nos quedemos con el cliché de persona que compra el bolso más caro o viaja en yate…) Sino más bien qué tiene de intangible: ¿qué significa viajar en primera clase? ¿y tener un ático en Manhattan? ¿y coleccionar arte?
Y siguiendo con la pregunta que ya hemos lanzado al aire, tenemos que empezar por analizar el significado de la palabra: lujo es la manifestación o exhibición de la riqueza, al mismo tiempo que varias cosas prescindibles, por así decirlo, que suponen una importante suma de dinero.
No obstante, el concepto y la necesidad del lujo van más allá de comprar una determinada marca o de tener por el mero hecho de gastar, comprar, ser ostentoso… Podríamos decir que traspasa lo material y es más una sensación y una experiencia, justamente lo que comentábamos en post anteriores sobre las tendencias actuales.
Al final, el concepto es tan amplio que lo que es lujoso para unos, para otros no lo es. Por ello, el ejemplo de viajar en primera clase no es meramente anecdótico. Representa lo incorpóreo y sútil que puede llegar a diferenciar lo que es lujo de lo que no lo es. Sencillamente, porque es relativo, individual y muy, muy subjetivo.
No nos queremos poner excesivamente abstractos así que vayamos a lo más simple de todo esto: la intangibilidad del lujo está en lo que hay detrás. En las emociones que suponen tener, vivir, experimentar lujo. No es tener lo que más desembolso de dinero requiere sino la diferenciación, la excelencia, lo exclusivo. No es viajar en primera, sino la tranquilidad, el ‘sentirse en casa’ que le proporciona al privilegiado viajero. No es coleccionar arte para tener el mejor cuadro o el más caro de una subasta, sino el fervor, el empeño e incluso la pasión que se ha puesto en conseguir esa obra y tenerla en casa. No sólo para que otros la admiren, sino por el regodeo de poseer algo exquisito.
Con estas últimas líneas volveremos al tema que en principio queríamos tratar: la razón por la que el arte es un lujo. No podíamos responder a ello sin antes cuestionarlos todo lo anterior. Y llegamos a una interesante reflexión: el arte es un lujo porque ya de por sí, es una muestra de talento, de primor, de una destreza única en una disciplina concreta. Y al adquirirla, haces que ese ingenio y maestría sean -de alguna manera- tuyos, independientemente del aspecto obviamente comercial que constituye obtenerlo.
¿Y qué atesora y guarda en su interior el lujo? Emociones, sentimientos, magnificencia, grandiosidad y, por supuesto, una -quizás inconsciente- búsqueda la perfección, inherente en el ser humano. Y como no, en el sujeto que habita en el lujo.
