The Seventh Art has depicted the figure of the personal assistant on several occasions. But as it’s often the case in the world of celluloid, we cannot always say that it is true to life. Or at least, it’s not the case which we can tell from our professional and personal experience. Do you want to know what movies we are talking about? If you already know them, do you think they reflect the true work of the personal assistant? Well without further ado, let the show begin… Lights, camera, action!

Surely, the first film that comes to your mind when talking about the profession of personal assistant is “The Devil Wears Prada.” As you well know, this 2006 comedy-drama, excellently performed by Emily Blunt, and Anne Hathaway and the incomparable Meryl Streep, is about a young journalist who lands in a ‘top’ magazine of the fashion world to work as an assistant to the super boss, a character inspired by Anna Wintour, director of Vogue in the United States.
Starting with the synopsis of the plot, we already can notice the first characteristic that cries out to us: Andy, a character played by Hathaway, seeks and accepts that job because it will open the doors to his true vocation – journalism. What do we have to say about this idea of ‘personal assistant’ being presented as a springboard job? That the figure of personal assistant is more than a preparation for another future profession. In fact, it is a profession unto itself. A ‘personal assistant’ offers a great diversity of knowledge and skills. Their functions and responsibilities, at the service of a person or organization, require talent and training, as they help in managing time in daily life, requiring services in all kinds of areas, both personally and professionally.
Apart from the glamor and pompous image that the Hollywood industry has accustomed us to, we also see the personal assistant in this story as a semi-slave … Of course, with expensive and chic clothes. The situation of each PA depends on the type of client they run into, of course. But the roles that we propose from Lifestyle remains the Antipodes of what they show us in this fun film production. We train future Personal Assistants of the social elite to turn them into what we call ‘Personal Angels’. Sometimes the reality outdoes fiction! Don’t you think?
Conclusion: being a personal assistant means managing the day-to-day life of the client who hires you, but that does not include getting the manuscript of the next book in the Harry Potter saga before it hits the bookstores. Although taking a good look at it, that hyperbolic moment of the film (without forgetting what it is… a film) is more in line with the concept of ‘personal angel’ that we pursue. What do you think?
Angels and demons aside, let the devil dress up in whatever designer he wants and let’s analyze a more current and less well-known film with a sweeter tooth than the previous one. Its title is already simple and concise: “The High Note”. It was realised in 2020, so it’s doubtful that it has been seen by many. From this film, we would highlight several aspects: it is a comedy but also a musical, as we put the world of fashion aside to make a room for the success of a song superstar (Tracee Ellis Ross). The one who puts herself in the shoes of the long-suffering PA is the actress Dakota Johnson, who, again, repeats the role of the young ‘aspiration’ – only this time her goal is to be a music producer- who becomes the personal assistant of a diva to achieve her ‘unattainable’ dream.
As we have been informed, The New York Times has criticised the film as: “a movie that can’t decide if it’s a musical reworking of “The Devil Wears Prada,” an underdog romantic comedy or a feminist arrow to the heart of the entertainment industry.”. Regardless of this, nothing favorable, implacable statement, what we come to point out is the first aspect to which it refers: its reasonable resemblance to “The Devil Wears Prada”! Perhaps, with more realistic signs of a personal assistant than in its predecessor, and more realistic representation of the job’s functions like: the close relationship with the client, personal assistant’s talent and professionalism, more human and less frivolous touch … But there we leave it, inviting you to visualize everything so that you can give us your opinion… Behind the scenes.

Asistentes Personales en el Cine
El séptimo arte ha plasmado en diversas ocasiones la figura del asistente personal. Pero como suele ocurrir en el mundo del celuloide, no siempre podemos decir que sea fiel a la realidad. O al menos, a la que nosotros podemos contar desde nuestra experiencia profesional y personal. ¿Quieres saber a qué películas nos referimos? Si ya las sabes, ¿crees que reflejan el verdadero trabajo del asistente personal ? Pues sin más preámbulos, qué comience el espectáculo… ¡Luces, cámara, acción!
Seguramente el primer film que te haya venido a la cabeza al hablar de la profesión de asistente personal haya sido ‘El diablo viste de Prada’. Como bien sabes, esta comedia-drama de 2006, excelentemente interpretada por Anne Hathaway y la incomparable Meryl Streep, trata sobre una joven periodista que aterriza en una revista ‘top’ del mundo de la moda para trabajar como ayudante de la super jefaza, personaje inspirado en Anna Wintour, directora de Vogue en Estados Unidos.
Empezando por la sinopsis del argumento, ahí ya vemos la primera característica que nos chirría: Andy, el personaje interpretado por Hathaway, busca y acepta ese empleo porque éste le abrirá las puertas para ejercer su verdadera vocación, que es el periodismo. ¿Qué tenemos que decir frente a esta idea de ‘personal assistant’ como trabajo-trampolín? Que la figura de asistente personal es algo más que una preparación para otra futura profesión. De hecho, es una profesión en sí misma. Un ‘personal assistant’ ofrece una gran diversidad de conocimientos y habilidades. Sus funciones y responsabilidades, al servicio de una persona u organización, requieren de talento y formación, pues ayudan en la gestión del tiempo de la vida diaria, requiriendo sus servicios en todo tipo de ámbitos, y en lo personal y profesional.
Al margen del glamour y postureo pomposo al que nos tiene acostumbrados la industria hollywoodiense, también vemos a la personal assistant de esta historia como a un semi esclava… Eso sí, con ropa cara y chic. La situación de cada PA depende del tipo de cliente con el que se tope, por supuesto. Pero el rol que proponemos desde Lifestyle queda en las Antípodas de lo que nos muestran en esta divertida producción cinematográfica, donde formamos a los futuros Asistentes Personales de la élite social para convertirlos en lo que denominados ‘ángeles personales’. ¡Mejor la realidad que la ficción! ¿no crees?
Conclusión: ser personal assistant supone gestionar el día a día del cliente que te contrate, pero eso no incluye lograr el manuscrito del siguiente libro de la saga de Harry Potter antes de que llegue a las librerías. Aunque mirándolo bien, ese momento hiperbólico del film (sin olvidarnos de lo que es… una película) sí que esté más acorde con el concepto de ‘ángel personal’ que nosotros perseguimos. ¿Tú qué opinas?

De ésta, destacaríamos varios aspectos: es comedia pero también musical, ya que aquí dejamos aparte el mundo de la moda para dar cabida al éxito de una superestrella de la canción (Tracee Ellis Ross). Y quien se pone en la piel de la sufrida PA es la actriz Dakota Johnson, quien otra vez repite el rol de la joven ‘aspirante a’ -en esta ocasión su meta es ser productora musical- que se convierte en la asistente personal de una diva para lograr su ‘inalcanzable’ sueño.
Según nos hemos podido informar, The New York Times rubricó esta crítica sobre el film: “Una película que no puede decidir si es una versión musical de ‘The Devil Wears Prada’, una comedia romántica de perdedores o una flecha feminista al corazón de la industria del entretenimiento”. Independientemente de esta implacable declaración, nada favorable, lo que venimos a señalar es el primer aspecto al que hace referencia: ¡su parecido razonable con ‘El diablo viste de Prada’! Quizás con notas más realistas al perfil de personal assistant que en su antecesora, y de sus funciones, de la relación estrecha con el cliente, del talento, de la profesionalidad, del toque más humano y menos frívolo… Pero ahí lo dejamos, invitándote a visualizarla para que tú mismo nos des tu juicio… Entre bastidores. Como en el cine, este no es el fin… habrá 2ª parte… sigue conectado.
